DMZ - A FATE Core Space Opera
The Church of the Holy Vault
A religion that sprang up shortly after the supernova, based in a number of vaults on planets in the Death Zone and Zone 2. While the planets they are on have mostly been scoured clean, the vaults were buried deep enough that there are still stockpiles of mostly intact advanced technology used by the inhabitants. While they are still in communication with each other, they don’t have interstellar travel capabilities. The vaults are still networked and are collectively run by an Overseer AGI, which is worshipped as a god. Spaceships are typically regarded as either angels or devils in Vault mythology, depending on whether or not they have the markings of The Children of the Sun.
As technology destroyed Pi^4 Orionis but also kept the vault inhabitants safe, it is still used, but in a very restricted and ritualistic manner – the knowing of technology is restricted to the clergy of the Church, known as the Engineers, who typically work in The Hallowed Maintenance Corridors when not preaching very select passages from The Sacred Technical Manuals to the faithful. The Chief Engineer’s mantle of office is a swirling cloud of nanomachines that lets them perform ‘miracles’, supposedly granted by the Overseer (but actually accessible to anyone who can make their way to the nanohive implanter deep with the Sacred Maintenance Corridors, past the doors marked accessible only by the Restricted Personnel of the church).
Jean Sui Jen was a former member, before finding the nanohive implanter and making off with a selection of Sacred Technical Manuals.
