Dr. Mohammed Chang (Deceased)

Genius Surgeon with cybernetic neural enhancements which contain priceless encrypted data

h.3 High High Aspect: Kidnapped, almost certainly dead

In episode 1, season 4 the Calmar crew arranged a meeting with Henry (that red headed dick) to make an exchange of goods. Once there Henry revealed he was responsible for Dr. Chang’s tragic backstory. The rest of the crew tried to fight off Henry and his hitmen rather than let Chang be taken by Henry. Knowing too well that the fight was too much, Dr chang tried to escape with the help of Ursury Jones. Once on the street he was imediately ambushed by Tech ninjas. Ursury, Joyce, and Henry helplessly watched as Chang was stabbed through the heart and went limp as one of the drew him into the cruiser.

High Concept Aspect: Cognitively Enhanced Surgeon

Dr. Chang is a cyborg with neural enhancements that augment his memory to be able to remember the sheer amount of required medical knowledge to operate on all the common uplifted animals and seemingly infinite cybernetic models. (c.M.D stands for cybernetic Medical Doctor)

Romanticizes the Hippocratic Oath

Despite being a pragmatic who approaches ethics and morals like he does science; Chang still clings to his childish conceptions of an idealized Hippocratic oath sworn by all medical practitioners. Even before joining with Henri, he would frequently get into trouble by chiding his peers for following the norm and just being an idealist in general.
-Also going to use the Declaration of Geneva as his oath. See bio.

Aspect: Sole Survivor

Only survivor of a heavily armed raid of Wellington Extraspecies People’s Hospital

Aspect: Hunted for His Mind_

Deep within the directories of the cybernetic memory banks lies an extremely valuable encrypted data file. Despite Dr. Chang’s best efforts, the encryption has proved to be unbreakable; the nature of the contents and the entities who seek it remain a dark mystery. “Dr. Chang”, if that’s actually his real name, still feels paranoid to go to lengths to remain anonymous.

Aspect: Trusts Ursury with all but his deepest secrets

As a favor in return for the many treatments Ursury received from Doc, Ursury investigated into the circumstances behind the mysterious fire of W.E.P Hospital. During the investigation Ursury gained Doc’s trust and was told the full extent of his trouble

I’m a doctor, not an encyclopedia! -Spend Fate point to replace skill with history

You have hundreds—if not thousands—of articles on a wide variety of topics stored in your memory banks. You can spend a fate point to use history in place of any other skill for one roll or exchange, provided you can justify having stored/read about the action you’re attempting.

There’s the jugular vein! -2x/encounter use medicine instead of fight

From years of experience in medicine you have intimate knowledge of locations of major arteries, pressure points, and general weaknesses of the body. Twice per encounter you may use medicine instead of fight where you can justify knowing the biological weak points of the target.

Conditioned Paranoia -Use empathy to determine turn order

You can use Empathy instead of Notice to determine your turn order in a conflict, provided you’ve gotten a chance to observe or listen to those involved for at least a few minutes beforehand during this scene.

Chang’s sworn oath:

At the time of being admitted as a member of the medical profession:

  • I solemnly pledge to consecrate my life to the service of humanity;
  • I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude that is their due;
  • I will practice my profession with conscience and dignity;
  • The health of my patient will be my first consideration;
  • I will respect the secrets that are confided in me, even after the patient has died;
  • I will maintain by all the means in my power, the honour and the noble traditions of the medical profession;
  • My colleagues will be my sisters and brothers;
  • I will not permit considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, social standing or any other factor to intervene between my duty and my patient;
  • I will maintain the utmost respect for sentient life;
  • I will not use my medical knowledge to violate human rights and civil liberties, even under threat;
    I make these promises solemnly, freely and upon my honour.

The incident

The Facts:
Three hours later the hospital goes up in a ball of flame which is later reported as a ruptured gas main explosion underneath the building. There were no reported survivors.

Doc’s Reality:
The following is deduced from eyewitness accounts of Dr. Chang and the investigations of Ursury
In a mix of genius and incompetence, an encrypted data packet was stored in the update files. These were copied onto Doc’s memory banks before they were overwritten by a patch. On his last day working at Wellington Extraspecies People’s Hospital, a squad of armed suits were asking questions regarding the data servers used to back up the memory enhancements all surgeons and doctors use. Doc felt the atmosphere turning hostile Two hours later a SWAT team raided the hospital and began seizing medical staff with the same model Doc uses and gunning down the rest. By this point Doc had been prepared and managed to escape. He immediately went home and grabbed anything important, and left just as a black van came rolling into the neighborhood.

Meeting Captain Henri

Deciding that getting off planet would be the best thing to do when you are pursued by a vague yet menacing agency, Doc headed for the spaceport. While trying to covertly find a ticket off planet Doc was pulled off the main path and into an alleyway by Henri.
“You look like you need to get off planet fast. I can help you but I need you to come now, I have an injured crewman who needs discrete treatment.”
“Who are… How do you…?!” Doc tried to ask in confusion.
“In the smuggling business you learn how to spot a potential client just by looking at them. Also you still have your scrubs and name tag under that jacket; if I hadn’t grabbed you I’m sure the people trying to find you would have no problem doing so. Name’s Henri by the way, Captain of the Calmar”
“Isn’t that french for-”
“Yes. But be quiet, the rest of the crew thinks it means something inspirational”

Captain Henry later offered me a full position on the vessel as the ship’s personal doctor as long as I also contributed to the profits of the ship by taking on non-disclosure surgery and other medical jobs he managed to scrounge up through his contacts. While not too happy to be demoted from a head surgeon in a prestigious hospital, Doc was overjoyed to have some excitement in his life for a change.

Unearthing the Past with Ursury the bear

Over time working on the ship, Ursury became a revolving door client. Due to his line of work, Ursury would frequently come back with wounds that wouldn’t be explainable to any legitimate doctors. After a while Doc hired Ursury to investigate the incident at W.E.P Hospital. At first Doc withheld his involvement and secrets, but Ursury earned Doc’s trust by not giving me away after he was abducted, questioned, and threatened to stay out of it. After that Doc confided in Ursury the full extent of my involvement and danger I have implicated him in. The two agreed that for the moment, the risk was too high to dig into any further. The doctor and P.I came out of the ordeal with a mutual respect and trust for one another.
